OSPE pre-budget submission focuses on increased investment and cost reductions

OSPE recently submitted its annual pre-budget submission to the Ontario Government. Highlighted in the submission were recommendations for increased spending on engineering-based technologies, strengthening of the Professional Engineers Act and the adoption of Qualifications-Based Selection.

Key OSPE recommendations at a glance:

  • The creation of a $90 million fund for development and commercialization of engineering-based technologies to assist with economic growth and job creation.
  • Encouraging the provincial government to fulfill its funding commitments on initiatives directed at enhancing infrastructure and the built environment.
  • Instituting more demand-side legislation naming professional engineers in key roles to ensure greater safety and security of Ontario’s infrastructure.
  • The adoption of Qualifications-Based Selection as the preferred procurement method.
  • The reversal of the government’s decision to duplicate the responsibilities of the regulator, Professional Engineers Ontario.

Pre-budget consultations give stakeholders the opportunity to offer direction and suggestions as to how the financial future of the province should unfold over the course of the next year. OSPE’s 2007 pre-budget recommendations are directed at generating greater economic and employment opportunities for Ontario’s professional engineers while at the same time supporting the provincial government’s need for fiscal responsibility.
