| Implementing
the Green Energy Act: Opportunities and Challenges
in Growing Ontario's Green Economy
October
27, 2009
- The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and
the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Centre for Engineering and Public
Policy at McMaster University were proud to convene a panel
of experts in Toronto to address opportunities and anticipated
challenges stemming from Ontario's Green
Energy Act.
"Getting the Green Energy Act passed into legislation
was just the first part", began guest speaker Sue
Lo, Assistant Deputy Minister, Renewables and Energy Efficiency.
She then outlined the Ontario Government's ten steps to green
energy which included the FIT (Feed-in-Tariff) and MicroFIT
programs, domestic content provisions, and the mandate of
the Renewable Energy Facilitation Office (REFO).
Dave Gerwing, P. Eng., took the podium with enthusiastic
kudos for the province's efforts, stating "with one
stroke of the pen, they made (Ontario) the best place in the
world to run a solar energy company!" As CEO of
Menova Energy Inc., Mr. Gerwing provided an implementer’s
perspective of the Green Energy Act, outlining an abundance
of opportunities for resourceful and entrepreneurial engineers
in this budding field.
Moderator Peter DeVita, P. Eng., DeVita Associates, conducted
a thorough question and answer period following the speaker's
individual presentations, in which the attendees engaged the
panel and offered opinions on a range of energy-related topics
including geothermal, wind energy, and the possible implications
of Buy American. "Our lives will never be the same
again", he commented, refering to the vast opportunities
presented by the Green Energy Act.
