| National
Engineering Week (NEW) 2005
February
26 to March 6, 2005
OSPE is
proud to play a major leadership role in the Ontario portion
of National Engineering Week (NEW) - one of our most visible
initiatives to promote our profession to the public and encourage
young people to consider careers in the field. This year,
over 130 Engineering Week events gave our fellow citizens
the opportunity to explore, discover and appreciate the "caring"
side of the engineering profession highlighting how engineers
contribute to the well being of people at home and around
the world.
Running
from February 26 to March 6, NEW Ontario saw hundreds of engineering
volunteers bring the face of our profession to the public
in 40 communities across the province. Thousands of kids,
teens and adults participated in Engineering Week events,
including K'NEX construction workshops, classroom activities,
robotics competitions, career talks, mall displays, student
design challenges, including mousetrap vehicles and rubber-band
powered cars, and even engineering student-run events to benefit
charities, such as a session on engineering the perfect "Pi
Throw", at the University of Toronto and a “24-Hour
Volkswagen Bug Push” by students at Ryerson University
to raise money for the Hospital for Sick Children.
A
special Engineering Week supplement on the theme “Engineering:
A Caring Profession” was published in the Ontario edition
of The Globe and Mail and appeared on February 24. The editorial
celebrated Ontario engineers and engineering technicians and
technologists who develop innovative new technologies that
improve and enhance our environmental health in Ontario, Canada
and abroad. The six-page supplement reached approximately
700,000 readers across the province.
Many thanks
to all of the OSPE members who volunteered at Engineering
Week 2005, making this year's events a resounding success.
