National Engineering Week celebrates a successful 2004
Feb 28 to March 7, 2004

In 2004, National Engineering Week(NEW) attracted hundreds of OSPE members and engineering volunteers devote their time and energy to promoting their profession to the public. The emphasis is on hands-on activities for children and youth that demonstrate real-life applications of the maths and sciences they study in school.

During NEW 2004, volunteer engineers, engineering technicians and technologists, and engineering and technology students set a new record by organizing over 100 events and activities in 35 Ontario communities. These activities attracted the participation of over 30,000 children, teens and adults.

Over 12,000 enthusiastic kids and parents participated in K’NEX construction workshops at five locations in Ontario: the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, the London Regional Children's Museum, the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, Science North in Sudbury and the new Waterloo Regional Children’s Museum in Kitchener. Over 100 engineering students and engineering and technology volunteers were on hand at the workshops to assist with the building projects.

Other Ontario activities included bridge-building competitions, robotics competitions, career talks, mall displays and demonstrations, new technology presentations and seminars and design projects such as a mousetrap-powered vehicle and “Mission to Mars” launcher.

A special Engineering Week supplement on the theme “Engineering: Visions of Things to Come” was published in the Ontario edition of The Globe and Mail. The editorial celebrated Ontario engineers and engineering technicians and technologists who are developing innovative new technologies that are changing our lives in dramatic ways. The eight-page supplement reached approximately 700,000 readers across the province.

OSPE would like to thank all NEW Ontario partners, including the hundreds of enthusiastic, hard-working volunteers who organized and conducted events and activities, our supplement advertisers and valued financial contributors. Your support made Engineering Week 2004 a great success!
