  Information for the Public

Professional Engineers
Professional Engineer is the term for licensed engineers in Canada. Engineering is the application of science to meet the needs of humanity. This is accomplished through knowledge, mathematics, and practical experience applied to the design of useful objects or processes. Engineering is concerned with the implementation of a solution to a practical problem.

There are more than 65,000 professional engineers in Ontario and more than 160,000 across Canada who are committed to enhancing the quality of life, safety, and well-being of Canadians. As a licensed professional, an engineer's first duty is to protect the public.

Professional Engineers in Ontario are licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

What is a P.Eng.?
The P.Eng., is the designation symbol for Professional Engineers. It appears at the end of their name and indicates that they are a licenced engineering professional.

Engineering in society
Traditionally, engineers have worked in fields such as mining, industrial, transportation, communications, chemical, aeronautical and civil engineering. Increasingly, engineers are also practising in new areas involving other professions and disciplines including medicine, information technology and nanotechnology to name a few.

Practically everything we rely on to live and work in Ontario every day is a product of engineering. From the water you drink to the cars you drive to the fact that the light comes on when you flick the switch. Engineers make our society run.
