Climate
Change Committee
At the June 2007 OSPE Board of Director’s meeting,
Board members approved the adoption of climate change as an
issue for OSPE to advocate for on behalf of engineers and
the engineering profession. A Climate Change Task Force was
established in November 2007, with Board approved Terms of
Reference. The task force meets approximately monthly and
is currently focusing on preparation for a one-day climate
change symposium highlighting the contribution of engineers
and engineering technology in the application of solutions
to mitigate green house gas emissions and to adapt to unavoidable
climate change effects.

Energy
Task Force
Professional engineers have a significant role to play in
helping Ontario meet its energy challenges. The Energy Task
Force was struck in response to the looming energy crisis
facing the province. The Task Force formulates positions to
be taken by the Society regarding the Ontario Government’s
energy agenda. The Task Force also examines provincial government
plans for the production and delivery of alternative energy
and identifies opportunities to partner with government on
implementation of those plans.

Ontario
Building Code Working Group
The OSPE
Ontario Building Code Working Group is responsible for analyzing
the requirements of the regulations made under Bill 124 as
they relate to engineers and engineering. Specific focus of
the committee will be on the insurance requirements and the
issue of niche engineering.

Professional
Engineers Act Task Force
The Professional Engineers Act has not undergone significant
review or revision in over 20 years. Since then matters such
as fees and other changes have been made through regulation
while other issues like the definition of the practice of
engineering, continuing education, right to title vs. right
to practice and specialization have not been adequately addressed.
The Professional Engineers Act Task Force is charged with
looking at these issues and others to formulate a proposal
as to how the Act can be modernized and what legislative changes
will be necessary to further that end.

Safe
Water Task Force
In the spring of 2000, OSPE struck the Safe Water Task Force
in response to the tragic events that unfolded in Walkerton,
Ontario. The Task Force testified before the Walkerton Inquiry
and submitted recommendations to Ontario’s Ministry
of the Environment, many of which were incorporated into Bill
175, the Sustainable Water and Sewage Systems Act, and Bill
195, the Safe Drinking Water Act. Today, mandatory involvement
of professional engineers in the management of Ontario’s
water system is resulting in more demand for engineers and
safer water for Ontarians. The Task Force continues to monitor
developments in the area of safe water and develops policy
recommendations for approval by the Board, as required.

Bob Goodings, P.Eng.

participates in planning at the national level. The Ontario
Society of Professional Engineers is the lead partner in NEWOSC,
which includes representatives from Professional Engineers
Ontario (PEO), Consulting Engineers of Ontario (COE), the
Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and
Technologists (OACETT) and the Ontario Science Centre.

Professional Engineers Foundation for Education
The Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education
provides scholarships to encourage students to pursue careers
in the engineering profession. The Foundation makes funds
available to each engineering school in Ontario, which awards
the scholarships according to criteria established by the
Foundation. The Foundation also includes the Professional
Engineers Benevolent Fund, which provides temporary financial
assistance to professional engineers and their families in
extenuating circumstances. Both the scholarship program and
the Benevolent Fund are financed through donations from Ontario
professional engineers.

Women in Engineering
Advisory Committee
Only 7% of all licensed engineers in Ontario are women. As
recently as 2001, only about 23% of all engineering students
in Ontario were women. The Women in Engineering Advisory Committee
(WEAC) was formed by Professional Engineers Ontario to determine
ways of improving the participation rate of women in the engineering
profession. In the spring of 2003, WEAC moved from PEO to
OSPE. Throughout the year, WEAC participates in events and
initiatives of interest to Ontario engineers, with the particular
goal of developing a more balanced and inclusive engineering
profession.
