SYMPOSIUM SPEAKERS

We are pleased to confirm the following keynote speakers for Engineering in a Climate of Change: Making the Lakes Great.

George Smitherman
George Smitherman served as MPP for the riding of Toronto Centre for over ten years and, during that time, occupied key positions in Premier McGuinty’s cabinet.

As Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and Deputy Premier, Mr. Smitherman led the largest expansion of Community Health Centres in the province’s history, helped provide over half a million Ontarians with access to a family doctor, and improved wait times for key services.  As Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George championed the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, making Ontario a North American leader in renewable energy policy and creating opportunity for more than 50,000 new green energy jobs.

Mr. Smitherman has been a long-time advisor to government leaders in all three levels of government including serving as chief of staff to former Toronto mayor, Barbara Hall.  He also has significant private sector experience, having been a small business owner and operator before first seeking elected office. In late 2009, he launched his mayoral campaign.

Dr. Ian Burton
Dr. Ian Burton is Emeritus Professor at the University of Toronto and a Scientist Emeritus with the Impacts and Adaptation Research Group of the Meteorological Service of Canada. He is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment Report, Working Group II, and has recently served as a consultant with the World Bank and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Dr. Burton has authored and co-authored several books and over 150 professional papers. His main work now deals with the role of science in the policy process. Since 2007, he has co-chaired Ontario’s Expert Panel on Climate Change Adaptation.

John W. Campbell, P. Eng.
John Campbell is President and Chief Executive Officer of Waterfront Toronto (formerly known as the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation). The Corporation is responsible for leading the estimated $17 billion renewal of Toronto’s central waterfront.
Before joining Waterfront Toronto in April 2003, John was a senior executive at Brookfield Properties. He headed up the Canadian property management services subsidiary and also played a leadership role in the development of the company’s most prestigious property – BCE Place; directing construction, marketing and leasing of the $1.2 billion award winning project.
Prior to joining Brookfield in 1989, John held senior positions in the real estate divisions of Bimcor Inc. and Bell Canada. He has an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Carleton University and has his Institute of Corporate Directors, designation (ICD.D).
